GPR/Easy Locator Advantages

Easy Locator

It is well established that GPR can detect many types of non-metallic utilities including pipes, cables, conduit, and duct banks in soils favorable to the GPR method. GPR in many cases is the only practical non-destructive method available to locate non-metallic or non-conductive utilities such as cast iron, PVC or other plastic pipes, concrete, and various composite pipelines. In some cases GPR is a stand-alone method that can solve a particular locate problem. However, as with standard electromagnetic or radio frequency line locating technology, GPR is not a panacea and is best used in conjunction with these other devices.

A general idea of the location of a utility or having accessed enabling connection to a utility is normally required for a successful locate with a radio frequency line locator. Using GPR provides the ability to scan large areas and detect many unknown utilities at one time without prior knowledge of their locations or directly connecting to them. Once a potential utility is detected with the GPR an effective way to integrate a cable locator is to place the transmitter on the ground over the target to see if a signal can be induced. This allows confirmation that the target is a conductor and it may also be traced to areas not accessible or through soils that are not favorable to GPR.

The use of the Easy Locator gives several advantages:

  • It locates non-metallic, such as PVC-pipes i.e.

  • It provides depth readings

  • High surveying speed

  • Built on leading technology, simplified to a low cost system

Limitations

GPR performance and the ability to detect utilities are limited by conductive ground such as clay or areas of salt-water intrusion. These conditions inhibit the ability of the GPR signal to penetrate the ground.

Modularity of the Easy Locator

The Easy Locator is available with two different antenna options. Every user of the Easy Locator system learns to appreciate its modular and flexible design. It is possible to move the control unit and the monitor between our optional antennas, which reduces your system costs compared to other systems that require the purchase of a complete unit to gain one additional frequency. Antenna selection is an important part of any GPR survey and the choice of antenna for a certain application is critical. Depth range and resolution are key factors that are governed by both the antenna choice and local soil conditions. Operators need the flexibility of a GPR system with a variety of antennas. Terraplus answers this need with our modular Easy Locator Series of high quality antennas.

Data quality

The Easy Locator uses 16 bit technology to create the cleanest, highest resolution data available. The Easy Locator system delivers more and costs less without compromising the performance and quality our customers expect.

Surveying speed

The 100 kHz pulse repetition frequency of the control unit makes our system on of the fastest GPR controllers on the market. The Easy Locator/GPR surveying speed can therefore be very high without having to reduce the quality of the data. The high surveying speed will reduce costly working days in the field to a minimum.

Antennas

There are currently two antennas available:

Shallow - for high resolution detection of smaller relatively shallow targets such as small conduits, and lateral service such as gas, water, and telecom, and in good soils larger deeper lines.

Mid - moderate resolution of smaller targets with penetration beyond the Shallow antenna. Detection of deeper water, sewer, gas, and telecom distribution as well as service connections.
